The City of Kansas City fully commits to the Model Employer initiative, only the second in the nation to adopt inclusive hiring practices

City of Kansas City Model Employer initiative results in the City of Kansas City being only the second in the nation to adopt inclusive hiring practices that promote the recruitment, hiring, and retention of persons with developmental disabilities. 


The City of Kansas City as a Model Employer initiative was announced in October of 2022 as part of s a collaborative effort between the cities Human Resources the cities Civil Rights and Equal Opportunity department, Summit Future Foundation, and Missouri Employment First, a statewide community of practice and technical assistance firm dedicated to advancing community employment for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Missouri.

The Model Employer initiative is designed to support local and state level governments in advancing the recruitment, hiring, and retention of people with disabilities through their own employment policies. This approach focuses on evaluating hiring practices, establishing strategic goals, and adopting policies and practices that result in creating a more inclusive workforce.

The ordinance will support the city in drafting and adopting actionable policies and practices that will result in the implementation of more inclusive hiring practices and create pathways of employment with the city of Kansas city for persons with disabilities. 

This ordinance will support the city in its dedication to become a Model Employer, in that it will facilitate the drafting and adopting of actionable policies and practices that will result in the implementation of more inclusive hiring practices, and advance the City’s efforts to create pathways for inclusive employment,” said Summit Future Foundation Executive Director Cassidi Jobe. “In addition, these steps will make the city of Kansas City the second city in the nation to adopt these types of inclusive hiring practices and the City will be creating a blueprint for other Kansas City-based businesses who are dedicated to creating employment opportunities for persons with disabilities”.
